SUMMERSIDE- The City of Summerside is proud to be the host destination for both the 15U Baseball National Championships and the U21 Women's Canadian Fast Pitch Championships this summer. Both events will attract over 400 participants, officials, staff, and spectators to our community this August. Community support is key to the success of these championships and the City of Summerside is pleased to announce our title sponsor for both events Quality Inn and Suites Garden of the Gulf.

Quality Inn and Suites Garden of the Gulf was ready to hit a home run when the opportunity arose to become the title sponsor for both events.

“I am honored to be involved with both of the National Championships this year” explained Quality Inn and Suites Garden of the Gulf owner Dave Groom “the U21 Softball was an amazing championship last year and I am looking forward to both events this year.”

Baseball and Softball have both been a large part in the success of sport hosting in Summerside, dating back to the early 1980’s. The 10 days of combined competition will attract over 400 participants, multiple officials and national sport organization staff as well as plenty of spectators from all across our nation to support and cheer on these talented athletes. Credit Union Place Will Once Again Be Transformed Into A Dojo!

SUMMERSIDE- JudoPEI is returning to Credit Union Place September 17, 2016 for the 1st Annual I-Athlete Red Sands Showdown Judo Challenge! Judoka will be putting on their Judogis and heading out on to the mats to perform in front of their Sensei, family and friends.

Just over 3 months have passed since hosting the 2016 Atlantic Judo Championships at Credit Union Place. Cheers from the crowd erupted inside the Eastlink Arena in March, creating a buzz around a sport not traditionally known to have spectators. The Atlantic Judo Championships were considered an outstanding success. With the outcome of the previous event, the organizing committee has decided to return to Summerside in September. The 1st Annual I-Athlete Red Sands Showdown will be held at Credit Union Place on September 17, 2016.

SETS (Sport & Event Tourism Summerside) conducted an economic impact analysis on the event using The Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance’s (CSTA) STEAM (Sport Tourism Economic Assessment Model) and released its findings today. The 1st Annual I-Athlete Red Sands Showdown Judo Championship will attract an estimated 650 guests including athletes, family, friends, officials and staff to the City of Summerside this September. Using the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance’s STEAM this event is estimated to have an economic impact of over $250,000 for Prince Edward Island.

“Reports from our March event were astounding and feedback from athletes, coaches and officials indicated that they were all impressed with the City, venue and the organization of the event” said JudoPEI Treasurer Brian Nash. “Our Tournament committee began looking for other events we could host and in the end decided to develop a fall event that we could call our own. With the generous help of our Title Sponsor I-Athlete, an Island based fitness training company, we are able to bring another high quality Judo Event to Summerside”.

Charlottetown and Summerside Partners on Sport Tourism Strategy

The City of Charlottetown and the City of Summerside have formed a partnership and developed strategic priorities to increase the impact of sport tourism, strengthen both cities as sport tourism destinations and leverage the hosting reputations and capacities of each municipality.

One of the goals of the partnership is to jointly bid on high impact signature sport tourism events that the cities don’t have the infrastructure or funding capacity to bid on individually. Some of the other shared goals include co-developing a made-in-PEI annual sport tourism event, and bringing leadership in sport tourism in PEI by working with community partners and other municipalities to attract events.

“Sport tourism has become a driving force in Charlottetown that stimulates substantial economic and tourism prosperity for our accommodation, restaurant and retail sectors,” said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee. “Hosting sport events also presents a tremendous opportunity to showcase all that our city has to offer as a destination, encouraging return tourism visitations.”

The cities engaged MRSB Consulting Services to facilitate a process with both municipalities to explore and define a shared vision and develop strategic priorities for 2016 until the year 2021. Proactively pursuing these opportunities will help both cities take advantage of the economic benefits associated with the fast growing sport tourism market.

“Sport and event tourism is very important to our local economy,” said Summerside Mayor Bill Martin. “The City of Summerside is committed to growing this sector and supporting our business community, as evidenced by the Council’s adoption of the first strategy in 2015. Sport and event tourism allows us to showcase our community’s hospitalities and stimulates community pride during and after each event.”

The Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance has reported that sport tourism contributed $5.2 billion from visitor expenditures to the Canadian tourism industry in 2012 and sport tourism revenues grew by 5.3 per cent from the previous year, making it Canada’s faster growing tourism segment.

By sharing costs, resources and infrastructure, Summerside and Charlottetown hope to be better positioned to win competitive bids for hosting high caliber events that may not otherwise be possible without the partnership.

Rogers Hometown Hockey SET to Land in Summerside City of Summerside

This morning, the Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour announced its list of communities to be visited in the upcoming season, year 2 of the wildly successful travelling roadshow. Set to return to PEI on December 12th & 13th in Summerside, the tour will be another exciting celebration of our national sport for our community. Rogers Hometown Hockey is a free family festival showcasing the best of our community, along with the best of hockey, past and present.

“Rogers is synonymous with quality programming and events, and the excitement this will bring to Summerside cannot be understated” said Mayor Bill Martin. “When you add that family component to the economic impact that a production like this brings to our community, it is something to be very excited about”.

Rogers Hometown Hockey Tour is a cross country, 24 city tour that travels across each province throughout the Hockey season. Kicking off in Kitchener Ontario on Friday October 9th, the tour will crisscross the country, even larger than last year’s event, which travelled 31,617km, attended by over 175,000 people, had participation by over 200 minor hockey teams, and featured 102 local stories.

Each stop will feature NHL Alumni, hometown heroes, local entertainment, and all new hockey stories delivered by host Ron MacLean, who once again takes his familiar spot inside the Sportsnet Mobile Studio every Sunday.

“Each weekend is a uniquely Canadian experience that brings us all together, said MacLean. “Our mantra has been simple - take you someplace and tell a story. We've discovered at each stop a story that belongs to us as no other story could. It's of Canadians, with hockey at its core.”

This year’s theme is “Celebrate the community, celebrate the game”, and more details will come on this exciting event in the coming days, which will take place on the waterfront at the Summerside Marine Terminal on Saturday December 12th and Sunday December 13th, 2015.

SET Summerside, the City’s Sport and Event Tourism arm of the Community Services Department is working very closely with Rogers to deliver this exciting event, another in a long list of exciting Sport Tourism deliveries for the residents of the City of Summerside and the surrounding communities.
